Research and teaching
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Birmingham is one of the largest orthopaedic centres in Europe. The Trust offers planned specialist care for all of the orthopaedic subspecialties, from elective arthroplasty for local patients, through to regional and supra-regional services (for example in spinal surgery and oncology).

The patient case-mix and the expertise of the consultant staff make the hospital an ideal environment for carrying out clinical research in orthopaedics. The Trust has a long history of conducting very important and influential research, which has helped shape the way orthopaedic conditions and injuries are treated today.

The Research and Development department facilitates clinical research within the Trust. We are a dedicated team of specialist staff that conducts research within the hospital on behalf of a variety of stakeholders. We offer:

  • Advice and assistance in obtaining relevant regulatory permissions for research
  • A clear line of communication for all costing/financial aspects of setting up a research project within the Trust
  • A strong track record of recruiting patients to target
  • Highly trained specialist research nurses to carry out clinical activities
  • Support from data managers who ensure accurate recording and timely submission of research data to coordinating centres
  • Dedicated research pharmacy staff to support any pharmacological aspects
  • Robust monitoring and research governance systems to ensure quality and regulatory conformity throughout the research process

The vast majority of our staff are employed to carry out research and have no other routine service commitments; research is what we do.

We work successfully with a range of sponsors, including commercial companies, academic institutions, other NHS bodies and charities.
