The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust has been the first choice for GPs referring patients for a long time. Here’s why:
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is the oldest orthopaedic institution in the UK and one of the largest units of its kind in Europe. We are a small, specialist teaching hospital offering planned orthopaedic surgery delivered by specialist teams, including surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, radiologists, pathologists, occupational therapists and all the other clinical professionals who look after patients with bone and joint disorders. The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital offers world leading services and has been at the forefront of orthopaedics for almost 200 years. We offer effective and expedient routine orthopaedic surgery alongside very specialist work in oncology, paediatrics and spinal services. Our consultants are among some of the very best in their fields as evidenced by their pioneering work and commitment to research.
Patient care and safety
Because we specialise in elective orthopaedic surgery, we take infection very seriously. Our infection rates are much lower than the national average, particularly for joint replacements. When you refer patients to us you can be assured that they will be cared for by our multidisciplinary team who provide a patient-centred, safe and compassionate package of care.
Innovative services you might not expect...
As well as our routine arthroplasty, complex spinal and world leading oncology services, we offer an innovative range non-surgical services:
Functional Restoration Programme (FRP)
FRP aims to train patients with persistent pain to become experts at managing their pain and improving their function and quality of life. FRP is built on a substancial evidence base and is delivering excellent results. Find out more here.

How to refer
Choose and Book
The Choose and Book system is an easy and quick way to book first appointments for patients for the majority of the services we offer. The online system offers flexibility in choosing dates and times which are convenient for the patient and provides the patient assurance that the appointment has been secured. Choose and Book referrals allow you to direct the referral to the most appropriate team or individual with the shortest waiting time.
Traditional referral letter
If you prefer to refer via a traditional letter, we've made it as easy as possible for you to find the right consultant for your patient.
When your referral arrives at our Trust, it will be assessed and then arrangements will be made for the patient to be seen by the most appropriate Clinician, Registrar, Advanced Nurse Practitioner or Extended Scope Practitioner with the shortest waiting time.
Satellite Clinics: care closer to home
We support care closer to home. Our patients can benefit from the expertise of our orthopaedic consultants closer to where they live. Our satelite clinics operate around Birmingham and are available via the Choose & Book Directory of Services. We run satelite clinics in Knowle, Solihull, Shirley, Sparkbrook, Worcester, Redditch, Bromsgrove and Sutton Coldfield.
We offer self-referral for physiotherapy patients. The benefits of self-referral include:
- saving time for you and your patients
- reducing waiting times
- improving attendance levels at appointments
- empowering patients to manage their condition
Please be aware that with effect from Wednesday 1st March 2017, the Oncology Service at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital no longer accepts fax referrals.
This email address uses secure NHS net protocols, making it safe to send patient sensitive information and you will receive an automated response confirming receipt of your referral.
Failure to include a completed form or correct information may result in a delay.
GPs should continue to use the Choose & Book system (e-referrals) for urgent two week wait patients. (The email process above is for tertiary and non-urgent referrals).
