Research Governance

Our Research Governance Team are the first step in opening a study at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
They are responsible for ensuring each research study meets the necessary approval procedures.
They adhere to the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research (https://www.hra.nhs.uk/planning-and-improving-research/policies-standards-legislation/uk-policy-framework-health-social-care-research/). This policy is in place to protects patients, researchers and hospitals and ensures that research is conducted safely.

Research Delivery Team

The Research Delivery Team is made up of three teams, Research Nurses and HCA’s, Research Physiotherapists and Research Administrators (including trial managers and data managers).
Research Nurses: Our Research Nurses and Healthcare Technician provide care and support to our patients when taking part in clinical research studies.
  • The Research Nurses approach potential patients to see if they would like to take part. They are responsible for taking informed consent, answering any questions the patient may have, booking treatment and follow-up appointments and collecting any data needed. They follow a research protocol which outlines everything that is needed for the study and they ensure that their patients receive the appropriate treatment and follow up and that the correct measurements and information is collected at certain points along the patients’ treatment pathway. They will continue to see the patient throughout the duration of the study and are the main point of contact for our research patients.
    Our Research Healthcare Technician supports the research nurses in organizing the collection of any tissues and ensuring that they are prepared and sent to the appropriate laboratory according to protocol requirements.
Research Physiotherapists: Our Research physiotherapists and extended scope practitioners provide expertise in the design and development of orthopaedic research studies.
They deliver physiotherapy interventions in accordance with protocol requirement and ensure that patient safety is maintained throughout treatment. They also collaborate with a range of academic and commercial partners to develop and deliver physiotherapy research programmes.
Research Administrators: This team comprises Trial managers, Study Coordinators and Data Managers to provide comprehensive project management and administrative support for our portfolio of research studies.
  • Our Trial Managers and study coordinators provide support to the Research Nurse and the researchers by helping to prepare all of the paperwork which is needed before and during the study, submitting applications for research approvals, monitoring study progress and checking the quality and completeness of any data collected.
  • Our Data Managers are responsible for all study documentation, including data collected from our patients. They ensure patients are followed up correctly according to each study protocol and are often the main point of contact for the companies and universities we work with once the study is underway. Data Managers screen all patients coming through the hospital to see if they are potentially eligible to take part in any of our current research studies. They highlight these patients to the Research Nurses who check eligibility and approach the patients.
